Types of Racism

Everywhere we go, we find racism of all sorts. Some people think that what they’re doing is not classified as racism, but racism is basically an umbrella term that describes many behaviors and thoughts against a certain race. Here are some types of racism that exist today.

One type of racism is Individual Racism, which is what we classify as the definition of racism. It is when a person’s behavior and thoughts are based on stereotypes against a race. An example is when a white person personally thinks that he is much more superior than a person of color. Even though we try to prevent such racist thoughts, it can be hard because these thoughts are often unconscious. Society has expressed colored people with negative images for many years, so our minds automatically jump to racist conclusions without us realizing it.

Another type of racism is Interpersonal Racism, which is racism between two individuals, aka when a white person projects their racist behavior towards a colored person. This type of racism is not common now, but it hasn’t disappeared yet. The most common instance of this type is when a white person calls the police on a colored individual or group and uses racial slurs while conversing with them.

Structural Racism is probably the most harmful form of racism. It's defined as " an array of dynamics that routinely advantage whites producing chronic adverse outcomes for colored people." In other words, it basically focuses on organizations rather than people. Structural Racism appears to be neither positive nor negative, which is why it's hard to measure it. An example is while trying to find a job. Requiring a college degree for a regular position might seem reasonable, but it can sometimes be a disadvantage to people of color because segregation in the past prevented colored people from going to college.

Even though racism has become a little less extreme now compared to the past, people of color are now experiencing more types of racism. Some of them are subtle while others are very obvious to identify, but either way, racism must end in order to have peace and unity in the world.
