Parties: Then vs. Now

All throughout time, people loved getting invites to the biggest party of the year. Everyone would look good and have such a great time. However, parties being thrown now are much different than in the past, from who was invited to what went down in each party.

Back in the 1900's, parties were a big thing. Throwing extravagant parties or being invited to one made someone popular and well liked. They were accepted as one of the rich in society and were well respected. These parties were also a way for everyone to show off their wealth. Families got to dress up in their nicest outfits and make everyone jealous. Affairs were also very common during these parties. Men would either find younger women to hook up with or women would find richer men to spend time with. These would either ruin marriages or some couples just never even let it bother them. For example, in the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy "threw her napkin on the table and excused herself and went into the house" when Tom first got a call from his mistress, but Daisy stays with him till the end of the book and never even considers to leave him.

Parties these days, however, are much different. The popular parties are the ones with the wildest people, best DJ and music, and the most drugs. People just go to parties to get wasted and have one-night stands with random people, but sometimes they might also find people that might become their future boyfriend or girlfriend. But you don't need to be rich to go to some of these parties. It can either be a walk-in or an invite, or you can even be someone's plus one.

In both cases, each type of party has a flaw, but also has something good about it. So which party would you choose?

  1. I like the analysis on how our society changed from the 1920's to today, parties in particular in this case. I see the parties of the 1920's as primarily being focused on displaying the wealth of the host and as something big to dress up for. Today's parties certainly have those characteristics, especially one catered towards older men and women, however the ones hosted by young adults certainly favor blaring entertainment over conversation.

  2. I like how you compared the style of how parties were thrown then and now! I didn't really fully realize that parties back then were more on showing off wealth and clearly less dramatic than ones now, where people go to purely for fun.
